National Industrial Hemp Variety Evaluation Trials (2018-2021)

Overview.

Beginning in 2018, WCFA has cooperated with the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance (CHTA) on the National Industrial Hemp Variety Evaluation Trials. WCFA's trials have been established at the Brazeau County Research site (NW 14-049-09-W5M). Each year a number of dual-purpose and grain type industrial hemp varieties are evaluated for grain and/or fibre yield, and cannabinoids.

WCFA Hemp Variety Trial (2017)

Overview.

Brazeau County, WCFA, and the University of Alberta Breton Plots collaborated on an applied research trial of industrial hemp in 2017 to determine viability of hemp in the west-central region. WCFA’s plot was established at the Brazeau County Research site.

2020 Trial Information.

Six dual-purpose and seven grain varieties were evaluated in 2020.

Seeding was conducted on June 5, 2020 at the Brazeau County Research site. Data was collected for seedling mortality, plant vigour, height, lodging, disease, male:female plant ratio, grain yield and fibre yield (for dual-purpose varieties only).

Six dual-purpose and six grain varieties were evaluated in 2019.

2017 Trial Information.

Five varieties and two seeding methods were evaluated in 2017.

Seed was either placed directly using the seed drill to a depth of one inch (disc drill treatment) or 'broadcast' by undoing seeder hoses and allowing the seeds to fall on the ground (broadcast treatment). The trial was seeded June 19, 2017.
