THE HISTORY OF FARMER’S DAY IN ALBERTA
Farmer’s Day has been a proud tradition in Alberta since 1951, when the province first recognized it as a holiday to celebrate the contributions of farmers and ranchers. Held annually on the second Friday in June, it was once a statutory holiday. Rural schools would close so families could attend agricultural fairs and community events that honoured the heart of Alberta’s economy: its producers.
Though it’s no longer a formal holiday, Farmer’s Day remains an important time to thank those who grow our food, care for our land, and build our rural communities.
At Farming Forward, we’re proud to celebrate Alberta’s producers - past and present - who lead with resilience, innovation, and deep-rooted stewardship.
Here's to the farmers who feed us, sustain us, and shape our future.
