About the Speakers
Dr. Kim Stanford
After being raised around cattle on the family mixed farm in southern Alberta and a little bit of schooling in between, Kim worked as a research scientist with Alberta Agriculture first as a Sheep Scientist before starting her work with on-farm food safety and specializing in beef cattle. After a career of more than 30 years with the Alberta Government and some murky government reorganization, somewhat to her surprise she found herself at the University of Lethbridge as an Associate Professor. At the University, she started the “Cows on the Planet” podcast to provide balanced information on beef-related issues and has continued her research in food safety and feed safety of byproducts and non-traditional feeds.
Assar Grinde
Assar Grinde operates a cow/calf and backgrounding operation near Rimbey, Alberta, where he bale grazes through the winter and feeds silage—resulting in a significant volume of used twine and plastic. As a strong advocate for responsible on-farm waste management, Assar was an early supporter of the Alberta Ag-Plastic Recycle It! pilot, an Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group (APRG)-led initiative administered by Alberta Beef Producers, operated by Cleanfarms and funded by the Government of Alberta. A past director with Alberta Beef Producers, Assar has become a vocal ambassador for agricultural plastics recycling, particularly for baler twine. His approach is practical and accessible: shake it out and bag it—no need for perfection. He’ll share how recycling twine has fit easily into his winter feeding routine, and why he believes more producers should give it a try. Expect a grounded, producer-first perspective on why on-farm plastic recycling matters, what’s working, and what’s next.
